Workation in Carinthia: working at 1,440 metres
Two weeks working where other people take their holiday – that works when three things line up: a real desk, a connection you can rely on, and something that makes you close the laptop after work.
A table is not a desk
The dining table works for three days. After that your back hurts and the video call shows everyone your kitchen.
That is why our apartment No. 2.302 Alpenblick on the Gerlitzen Alpe has a dedicated workspace. Not large, but a fixed spot with good light where the laptop can stay put while you make lunch.
If you are staying longer than a week and really intend to work, please say so when you enquire. We will tell you exactly what connection to expect in that apartment – better an honest answer beforehand than a surprise on arrival.
The rhythm up here
At 1,440 metres the mornings are quiet. Day visitors only come up on the Kanzelbahn later, and skiers are rarely out before nine.
That gives you three or four undisturbed hours before noon. Keep the afternoon free and you are on the piste or a trail by four, and back at the desk by seven if anything is still open.
In winter it reverses: the morning belongs to the snow, and from two o'clock the pistes empty and the desk gets quiet.
What there is after work
In summer: 147 kilometres of marked paths start practically at the door, the PROlitzen Trail runs four kilometres down to the valley station, and the summit at 1,911 metres is a short detour with a 360-degree panorama.
In winter: 53 kilometres of piste and 18 lifts, plus cleared winter walking paths looking down on Lake Ossiach.
And if you want to get into the water: Lake Ossiach lies below the mountain. Mountain air in the morning, a swim in the afternoon – on the same day.
The longer stay
For stays of two weeks or more, please talk to us directly. We will clarify in advance the things nobody asks about on a short stay: interim cleaning, laundry, post, shopping and what happens if the road closes because of snow.
The valley alternative: by Lake Ossiach you are closer to Villach, the railway and the motorway. That is the better choice if you need to travel to appointments in between.
