Snow into May
At 1,763 metres the snow lingers. In heavy years there is still some on the north-facing slopes in early May.
Spring skiing
The season usually runs into April. Long days, soft afternoon snow and hardly any queues at the lifts.
The lakes give way
The Turracher See sometimes stays frozen into May. The sound of the ice breaking up is one you do not forget.
The lifts rest
Neither the Panoramabahn nor the Nocky Flitzer runs from mid-April to early June. Come in that window and you should enjoy walking.
Stone pines after rain
The pine forest smells strongest in spring, just after rain. Hard to describe, easy to verify.
The marmots emerge
Late April or early May ends seven months of hibernation. You spot them first on the slopes above the lakes.
When the bilberries ripen
In September the slopes turn red and bilberries hang between the dwarf shrubs. It becomes hard to make progress on a walk.
Sunrise on the Schoberriegel
About 400 metres of ascent, an hour and a half from the village. Set off early and you will usually have it to yourself.
Gold among the green
The stone pines stay green, the larches turn. In October the forest looks unlike any other time of year.
The Nockberge trail
The stages across the rounded ridges walk best in autumn: cool air, long views, no crowding in the huts.
Until early November
Summer lift operation usually ends on the first weekend of November. By then the first snow has often arrived.

Turracher See, 1,763 m
The largest of the three mountain lakes lies right on the pass – 18.3 hectares, up to 33 metres deep, with a flat path around the shore.
Schwarzsee and Grünsee
The Schwarzsee lies at 1,841 m between raised bogs, the Grünsee slightly below. An easy circular walk links them both.
Nocky Flitzer
The alpine coaster runs all year: around 1,600 metres, three spirals, two jumps, fifteen waves and a bridge – from the Panoramabahn top station down to Turracher Höhe.
Nocky's AlmZeit
A mountain adventure area at the Panoramabahn top station: a circular path with seven stations around Nocky the mountain hare, a playground and a hut.
Turracher Höhe ski area
43 kilometres of pistes of every grade, a snowpark, full snowmaking. Thanks to the altitude the winter lasts longer here than elsewhere in Carinthia.
Swiss stone pine forest
Around the pass stand some of the largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forests in Europe. In summer the scent is unmistakable.

The barrier-free combined lift takes guests to around 2,000 m – the starting point for hikes, the Nocky Flitzer and Nocky's AlmZeit.
Kornock Flowtrail
Six kilometres of flowing descent for mountain bikers, plus a jump line, e-bike tours and a dedicated practice area for children.

At 1,763 metres, the question of a holiday house on the Turracher Höhe quickly becomes a question of what is inside it. Our Chalet Apartment Almzeit in the Maierbrugger settlement has its own sauna and two bedrooms, each with a double bed and a high bunk. That suits a family with children as readily as two couples.
A holiday on the Turrach has a quirk you only grasp on arrival: the village sits on a mountain pass, with the border between Carinthia and Styria running straight through it. Three mountain lakes are within walking distance, and behind them begins Austria’s largest continuous stone-pine forest. In winter, 43 kilometres of piste are fully covered by snowmaking, with a season usually running from late November into April.
In summer the altitude keeps things pleasant when the valley turns muggy – the difference to Lake Ossiach is over 1,200 metres. The Nock mountains are rounded rather than jagged; even the Eisenhut at 2,441 metres can be reached without climbing gear.
The year on the pass
Four seasons at 1,763 metres
The Turracher Höhe is neither valley nor summit but a saddle between the two, with a provincial border running through the middle. That shapes the weather: it arrives from both sides, and the snow stays a long time.
Winter lasts longer here than almost anywhere else in Carinthia. The season usually starts in late November and runs into April; 43 kilometres of piste have full snowmaking, which is rarely needed. The Nocky Flitzer runs on snow too, unlike most summer toboggan runs.
Spring is an in-between time in the literal sense. The lifts stop in mid-April and summer operation only begins in early June. In the seven weeks between, the snow retreats, the lakes shed their ice and the marmots come out. If you travel then, know that little is open – and that this is precisely the appeal.

No. The Nock mountains are rounded rather than jagged. Even the Eisenhut at 2,441 metres, the highest peak in the Gurktal Alps, can be reached without climbing gear – sturdy shoes and stamina are enough.
When do the cable cars run in summer?+
