Winter at Turracher Höhe: 43 kilometres of piste and three mountain lakes
At 1,763 metres winter starts earlier and ends later. That is why families book up here when other places have already run out of snow.
The ski area
43 kilometres of piste of every grade, full snowmaking and a snowpark. Being on a high plateau means short distances between the lifts and no long valley runs where small children give up.
The season usually runs from late November into April. Exact dates are announced by the lift company each year.
Ski schools and childcare are available in the village. In high season, book courses early.
The Nocky Flitzer
The alpine coaster runs all year, snow included. Around 1,600 metres, three spirals, two jumps, fifteen waves and a bridge – from the Panoramabahn top station down to the pass.
For children who have had enough of skiing, this is the afternoon that saves the day.
If you do not ski
Cleared winter paths lead around the Turracher See and across the plateau. The lake sits at 1,763 metres, covers 18.3 hectares and is up to 33 metres deep.
There are also cross-country trails, snowshoe routes and ski tours into the Nockberge – some with a mountain guide.
Tobogganing is available in the village, hire included.
The pines
Around the pass stand some of the largest contiguous stone pine forests in Europe. In winter the trees stand black against the snow; in summer the whole slope smells of them.
Come in spring and you get both: snow on the north-facing slopes and the first paths through the pine forest.
Where you stay
Our Almzeit chalet apartment is in the Maierbrugger settlement, a few minutes from the piste and ski school. Two bedrooms, each with a double bed and a loft bed, parking right by the house – and a sauna of your own that you do not share.
After a day at minus ten degrees, that is the point where the extra cost pays for itself.
Getting here in winter
Via the A10 to Villach or Feldkirchen, then up. In Austria, winter equipment is required in wintry conditions between 1 November and 15 April. For the climb we also recommend carrying snow chains.
